Free alternatives to Roam Research
1 free program that can replace Roam Research, a pairing checked by Radar's AI reviewer or by Radar.
Roam Research is an online note-taking tool built around linked notes: pages and blocks that refer to each other, with daily notes as the starting point. Researchers, writers, students and knowledge workers use it to keep a connected body of ideas. It is a subscription service, so your notes live in your account there.
Before you move, export your graph and read what you get. Check whether page links, block references, tags, daily notes, queries and attachments survive, because these are the features that differ most between tools. Exports in plain formats such as Markdown are easy to keep, but references between blocks may turn into ordinary text. Look at what you rely on beyond the basics: plugins, keyboard shortcuts, templates, the graph view and any graphs shared with other people. Collaboration deserves a plan, since teammates who edit in Roam will need another way to work with you. Expect some habits to change, and leave your Roam account untouched until you are happy with the result.
