Free alternatives to Topaz Gigapixel AI

Topaz Gigapixel AI is a desktop program from Topaz Labs that uses artificial intelligence to enlarge images and add detail, so a small photo can be printed or shown at a bigger size. Photographers, designers, people who restore old pictures and anyone preparing images for print are the usual users.

Before switching, test with your own pictures, because results vary a lot with the type of image: faces, text, drawings and textured surfaces can each look different after enlarging. Check which file formats the alternative reads and writes (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, RAW), whether it handles many files at once, and whether it keeps colour profiles and metadata. Look at hardware needs as well: AI enlargement often depends on a recent graphics card, and a slower computer can take a long time per image. If you use the paid program as a plugin inside a photo editor, check whether you would need to export and import files by hand.

Upscayl and Stable Diffusion web UI, both in the list below, work quite differently from each other, so compare a few results side by side before you decide.
