Filee

KnifeLemon/FileeReviewed by AI

What it does

Filee is a free file converter for Windows, Mac and Linux. You hold a key, drag files, and drop them on the format you want in a round menu that opens at your cursor. It handles images, PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Korean HWP, e-books, archives, fonts, CAD and 3D files, and can merge, split or compress PDFs. Files stay on your computer. Video, audio and some older formats need extra free engines that the app downloads when needed. The Windows installer needs nothing else installed; the Mac version is marked as a preview.

How easy it is to install

A · download and open · Windows

  • Windows A
  • macOS B
  • Linux C

Windows is the easiest: a signed Setup.exe (also on the Microsoft Store) and a portable .zip that need nothing else installed. On Mac you open the .dmg, drag the app to Applications and then allow the first start in Privacy & Security because the build is not notarized. On Linux you unpack the package and run ./install.sh, which needs Python 3, and drag gestures only work on X11.

README.md: optional engines (Ghostscript, LibreOffice, Pandoc, calibre, FFmpeg) are "downloaded only when needed" from locations pinned in `engines.json`.

  • Inforeadme suggests disabling protection

README.md: if Filee does not start on an outdated Windows 10, run as administrator `Set-ProcessMitigation -Name Filee.exe -Disable UserShadowStack`; updating Windows is the recommended fix.

  • Infoolder releases unsigned

README.md: "Releases before it, up to 2.0.0, are not signed" and "macOS packages are ad-hoc signed and not notarized".

What Radar could not check

  • How faithfully Word, Excel, PowerPoint and HWP files keep their layout after conversion.
  • Real disk space after the app downloads optional engines such as LibreOffice or FFmpeg.
  • Whether the drag-and-drop menu works with every Windows setup and keyboard.
  • What the self-updater downloads and how updates are verified.
  • Whether the Mac preview and the Linux build work as well as the Windows one.
