Snapintosh/SnapintoshReviewed by AI

Radar found strong risk signals in this project. It stays visible so you can read the evidence, but it is left out of rankings and recommendations.

What it does

A low-level monitor (hypervisor) plus build tools that make Apple's macOS 27 kernel start on an ASUS Zenbook A16 with a Snapdragon X2 Elite chip, including a hand-written graphics driver for the laptop's Adreno GPU, keyboard, touchpad and NVMe storage. Nothing else is supported. You need that exact laptop, a second Mac running macOS 27 connected by USB-C, Xcode, Apple's Kernel Debug Kit, Python 3 and several build tools, and you must supply Apple's macOS restore image yourself. The authors call it experimental and say to expect crashes.

How easy it is to install

E · developers only · macOS

On macOS, the only system the tools run on, this is an E: there are no releases or ready files, and the Building section asks for Xcode with the macOS 27 SDK, Apple's Kernel Debug Kit for build 26A428, Python 3, Homebrew LLVM, Meson and Ninja, a second repository checked out next to this one, and a boot cycle driven over USB-C from the Mac.

Risk signals (6)

  • Highruns macos outside apples licence

The whole purpose is stated in the README: "Snapintosh boots Apple's macOS 27 (build 26A428) on an ASUS Zenbook A16 laptop with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite", and its own Legal section says "Running macOS on non-Apple hardware may conflict with Apple's macOS software licence agreement." The monitor supplies "the SPTM and TXM monitor calls" so Apple's kernel accepts non-Apple hardware, and the user must fetch Apple's restore image with tools/fetch-ipsw.py.

  • Attentioncan destroy data on the laptop

README Warning: "It writes the internal NVMe SSD. Installing macOS changes the partition table... A bug can corrupt or destroy data on the SSD, including the Windows installation", and it "programs clocks, voltages, the GPU and memory-bandwidth votes directly".

    AI review

  • Attentionbig claims almost nobody can check

Repository created 2026-10-22 with 1012 stars already, no GitHub releases, and the README says it works on one machine only: "An ASUS Zenbook A16 with the Snapdragon X2 Elite X2E-96-100 (UX3607OA). Nothing else is supported." Together with the check on the 4-day-old owner account, the claims cannot be reproduced by almost anyone.

    AI review

  • Infomixed licences in one project

LICENSE file: "Snapintosh is MIT with GPL-2.0 components", and a binary built with the Adreno table "is a combined work and is distributable under GPL-2.0", so anyone redistributing a build is bound by GPL-2.0, not MIT. GitHub itself reports the licence as NOASSERTION.

    AI review

  • Infopulls firmware from other sources

README "Bring your own Apple software": GPU microcode (gen80100_gmu.bin, gen80100_sqe.fw) and Wi-Fi firmware come from linux-firmware, and the Wi-Fi board file comes from ASUS's Windows driver package; the tools check each file against a pinned SHA-256.

What Radar could not check

  • Whether it really boots to a working macOS desktop as the status table says; there are no releases and only one laptop model is supported.
  • Whether the pinned file hashes still match the firmware Apple and ASUS ship today.
  • Whether the battery and thermal guards prevent damage to the laptop; the README says they are "not a guarantee".
  • How much disk space the build, the restore image and the Kernel Debug Kit take together.
  • Whether Apple's kernel really runs unmodified in practice, since the docs also describe opt-in kernel patches.
