WordCraft
storytold/wordcraftReviewed by Radar
What it does
WordCraft is a free desktop word processor with a Word-style ribbon, styles, tables, track changes, comments, footnotes, citations and mail merge. It opens and saves .docx and also handles .odt, .rtf, Markdown and PDF export. It is for anyone who writes documents and wants an open-source option. On Windows you download an installer or a portable zip. The project calls itself alpha and estimates it is about 60% ready for real work, so complex Word files may not look the same.

What Radar could not check
- How faithfully real-world .docx files from Microsoft Word keep their layout after opening and saving.
- Whether the app starts on your graphics card; the README documents DirectX 12 and driver crash workarounds on Windows.
- Whether the built-in update component (craft-update in Cargo.toml) contacts a server, and what it sends.
- Stability with long documents, since the project says a stability sweep is still pending.
- Whether the code-signed release files match the source code.
