TradingAgents

What it does
TradingAgents is a research tool where several AI agents play the roles of a trading firm (analysts, researchers, a trader, risk managers) and debate a stock or coin using prices, news, company filings and social posts. It ends with a written report and a rating, and trades only go to a simulated exchange. It can also score past decisions and run backtests over a grid of dates. The README says it is for research and is not financial advice. You need Python 3.11+, a few commands, and an AI model: a paid API key, a ChatGPT plan sign-in or a local Ollama model.
How easy it is to install
C · install 1 or 2 tools · Windows
- Windows C
- macOS C
- Linux C
C on Windows, Mac and Linux alike: none of the 15 releases carries an installer, so on each one you install Python 3.11 or newer, download the code, run `pip install .`, put an AI key in a `.env` file and start the `tradingagents` command in a terminal. Docker is offered as an alternative route.

- Python, Docker
- Disk space

- AI model provider of your choice (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, Groq and others), Alpha Vantage (market data), FRED (US economic data, free key), TypeSafe Jev (social post screening)
- Cost
- Free, API costs extra · The software is free (Apache-2.0). Each analysis makes many calls to an AI model, which usually means a paid API key or a ChatGPT Plus/Pro plan; a local Ollama model avoids that cost. Docker is an optional way to run it.

- Infonot financial advice
README: "TradingAgents framework is designed for research purposes... It is not intended as financial, investment, or trading advice."

- Inforesults change from run to run
README, "Reproducibility": "two runs of the same ticker and date can differ", and "Backtest results are not guaranteed to match any published figure... Treat the framework as a research scaffold... not as a strategy with a fixed, replicable return."
AI review
- Inforatings rest partly on social media posts
README: the Sentiment Analyst "Aggregates news headlines, StockTwits, and Reddit chatter into a single sentiment read"; without the optional TypeSafe key "posts pass through unscreened", so anyone posting about a ticker can feed text into the analysis.

README: "At start-up the interactive CLI mentions a newer release and notices from Tauric Research. It checks at most once a day... set TRADINGAGENTS_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1 to turn it off."

- Infosends a default contact address to the sec
README, "Fundamentals as filed": "SEC asks callers to identify themselves and refuses requests that carry no contact address, so a default one is sent", and it asks you to set `SEC_EDGAR_USER_AGENT` to your own name and e-mail instead.

What Radar could not check
- How much one analysis costs in AI API fees, since many agents call the model several times per run.
- Whether the install steps work on Windows as written; the README shows Linux/macOS commands such as "source .venv/bin/activate" and "export".
- How good or repeatable the ratings are; the README itself says two runs of the same stock can differ.
- Whether free data sources such as Yahoo Finance keep working; the README mentions Yahoo's news feed being down.
- What the memory log and the per-ticker checkpoint databases under ~/.tradingagents keep about your own portfolio once you pass one in.
