What it does
OpenCode is an AI coding assistant for people who write software. You describe a change in plain words and it reads your project files, edits them and can run commands. A second, read-only "plan" mode only looks and asks before running commands, and a "general" helper handles long searches. It runs in a terminal, and the desktop app, marked beta, has ready installers for Windows, Mac and Linux. You still need an account or key for an AI model service, which may charge for use.
How easy it is to install
B · installer plus one simple step · Windows
- Windows B
- macOS B
- Linux B
Release v2.2.5 carries ready desktop installers for all three systems (`opencode-desktop-win-x64.exe` at 252 MB, `opencode-desktop-mac-arm64.dmg`, and .deb/.rpm/.AppImage for Linux), all marked beta; after installing you still have to connect an AI model account or key. The terminal version is a separate download or one install command.

Risk signals (6)
- Infofull access agent by default
README.md: "**build** - Default, full-access agent for development work"; only the optional "plan" agent "Denies file edits by default" and "Asks permission before running bash commands".
AI review
- Infodesktop app is beta
README.md heading: "### Desktop App (BETA)". The window-based version is still being tested by the project itself.
AI review
- Infoinstall script runs from website
README.md Installation: "# YOLO" followed by `curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/v2/install | bash`. The `install` file in the repository then asks https://opencode.ai/update/api/latest/cli/npm which version to fetch and downloads it from registry.npmjs.org, so that path runs code fetched at install time rather than the files in this snapshot.
AI review
- Infosends your code to outside services
package.json lists AI provider packages such as `@ai-sdk/openai-compatible`, `@ai-sdk/google` and `@ai-sdk/mistral`. Whatever files the assistant reads go to the model service you connect.
AI review
- Infovery fast release pace
Project facts: 892 GitHub releases since 2025-04-30, with v2.2.3, v2.2.4 and v2.2.5 all dated 2026-10-30. Versions change several times a day, so what you install today may behave differently tomorrow.
AI review
- Infoupdates itself from the project servers
package.json patches `[email protected]` and `[email protected]`, and the repository's `install` script reads https://opencode.ai/update/api/latest/cli/npm. The desktop app and the command can therefore fetch new versions on their own.

What Radar could not check
- Whether the beta desktop app works reliably on each system
- How much the connected AI model service will actually cost for your use
- Exactly which files and project content are sent to the model service
- Whether any free model option works without a key of your own
- What the app downloads when it updates itself while running
- Real disk use, since the Windows desktop installer alone is 252 MB
